A Working Family Farm
with Nature Conservation at it's Heart.
South Town Farm is situated in the tranquil, rural village of Loxhore, deep in the peaceful countryside of North Devon. We are tenant farmers of the National Trust, farming over 200 acres of the Arlington Estate including several Sites of Special Scientific Interest. Our farm is run on a no input system, meaning no fertilisers (artificial or otherwise) are brought onto the farm. Only our own farm yard manure is spread on a small percentage of the holding. Most of the land we manage consists of unimproved grasslands, maintaining biodiversity and allowing local flora and fauna to thrive. We use traditional breeds on an extensive, grass fed system. High welfare standards are a vital part of livestock management at South Town and we care passionately for the land in our trust, striving to successfully link food production together with the conservation of wildlife habitats across the farm. We work closely with The National Trust and Devon Wildlife Trust to ensure our habitats are managed sensitively and sustainably.
South Town Team
We were very lucky to have the opportunity to take on the National Trust tenancy at South Town at the end of March 2015. We came to North Devon in 2000 when Murray took the post of Head Ranger at the National Trust Arlington Estate. This role included running the in-house farm and managing the 2,700 acre woodland and pasture, standing him in good sted to take on South Town Farm when it became available. Very much a part of our family team is the wonderful Wynn, our border collie. Everyone mucks in when things need to be done - especially during lambing, our busiest time of the year.
